Here is a video from a TEDx conference in Iowa City. TED is an organization that sponsors amazing lecture series on emerging trends. Topics include medicine, art, agriculture, technology, business, and more. The “x” after TED stands for an independently organized conference in the spirit of TED, which promotes “ideas worth spreading”.

The following video features a lecture from Dr. Terry Wahls, who claims to have cured herself of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by eating for her mitochondria. What are mitochondria, you might ask? These mini-organs inside our cells make energy molecules called ATP. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, a molecule that cells exchange to grow, multiply, and repair themselves.

MS is an autoimmune disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. Autoimmune means that the body attacks itself, confusing the self as other. There is no cure for the disease, however, some medicines have been shown to slow the progression and improve the quality of life. physicians also suggest that patients exercise and eat healthily as a complimentary therapies.

Dr. Terry Wahls, a physician, educator, and researcher at Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, took it upon herself to find a treatment for MS better than the conventional ones. While exploring research on pubmed.gov, she learned that animals with MS responded well to a nutritional therapy. Dr. Wahls revamped her diet and began eating more like our hunter and gatherer ancestors. The results are remarkable – watch the video to see for yourself.
