Everything You Should Know About Preconception Care for Safe Pregnancy

How beneficial it is to have preconception care if you are trying to get pregnant? Most couples think about it today. It is essential for safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.  Anytime is not too early to start preconception care, for some women may need months to get their body prepared for pregnancy, while some others may need only a few months. However, it is always advisable to take proper healthcare before you conceive. This will give you the healthiest pregnancy possible. Some things that you need to take care before you conceive are:

Consult Your Doctor

Once you have decided to get pregnant, it is important to have a plan and consult your doctor. You should discuss your health condition with your doctor, who may suggest some tests and ultra sound scan to eliminate PCOS pregnancy and other infertility conditions. You should also let your doctor know your medical history and current health conditions, which may affect your pregnancy. The pre-existing pregnancy problems, or contraceptive medication you are taking currently should necessarily be talked about. The gynecologist may suggest some vaccinations and preconception care to follow before conception to eliminate birth defects.  

Make a Checklist of Talking Points with Your Doctor

Before you visit your doctor, do not forget to create a checklist, and it must include:

  • Your current medical condition
  • Lifestyle and behaviors
  • Medications
  • Vaccinations (shots)
  • Family medical history

If you have any, discuss your medical conditions, and make sure that they are under control. Some medical conditions you may have are diabetes, STD, thyroid problems, PCOS, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

PCOS Pregnancy

Other medical conditions are easy to control with proper medication when compared to PCOS. If you have PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome, which is a hormonal condition that affects your fertility. It requires serious treatment and medication to get pregnant. Having PCOS does not mean you cannot conceive, but it requires extra care and medication for healthy pregnancy.

Avoid Consuming Alcohol and Quit Smoking

You should let know your doctor about any habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol, using certain drugs, working with toxic substances, and living in a stressful or abusive environment. You may need to undergo treatment, counseling, and supportive services for healthy pregnancy. Moreover, you should quit your bad habits.

Take Folic Acid Every Day

Your body needs enough folic acid when you get pregnant. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps with the growth of a baby, especially with the development of baby’s brain and spine.  If the mother has sufficient folic acid in her body for at least 1 month before she conceives, it can help prevent some birth defects in the baby.

Maintain Weight

Women with obesity or overweight are at a high risk during pregnancy owing to complications such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and endometrial cancer. These complications may be a hindrance in getting pregnant and having a healthy child. You need to follow a nutritious diet and do suggested exercise to maintain good health and bodyweight.

Learn Your Family History

It always good to know your family history to avoid inherited and genetic diseases. You can check if any of your family members have hereditary diseases such as sickle cell disease or any inherited medical conditions. This is very important for your child’s health. It is essential to discuss with your doctor your family medical history.

Be sure to lead a healthy life, maintain a happy environment, follow healthy habits, and have a routine health checkup throughout your gestation period, and even after child birth to have healthy delivery.
